Landry in Like (Landry’s True Colors Series: Book 3) by Krysten Lindsay Hager

Blurb: Things seem to be going well in Landry Albright’s world—she’s getting invited to be on local talk shows to talk about her modeling career, her best friends have her back, and her boyfriend Vladi has becoming someone she can truly count on…and then everything changes. Suddenly it seems like most of the girls in school are into hanging out at a new teen dance club, while Landry just wants to spend her weekends playing video games and baking cupcakes at sleepovers. Then, Yasmin McCarty, the most popular girl in school, starts to come between Landry’s friendship with Ashanti. Things take a turn when Yasmin tells Vladi that Landry is interested in another boy. Can Landry get her relationships with Ashanti and Vladi back or will she be left out and left behind?

I wanted to call my friends and tell them about being on the talk show, but Mom said we had to be at the TV station super early — even before school started. She said I could text them, but I had to turn off my phone and go to bed.

“I’m waking you up at four a.m.,” she said. “You have to be there at five-thirty.”

“Can I just call Peyton and Ashanti? Please?”

“Fine, but you have five minutes and then that phone is mine and you’re in bed.”

I dialed Peyton, but her mom said she was in the shower. I told her mom about the show tomorrow and said my mom wouldn’t let me stay up any later to call Peyton back.

“How exciting! I will make sure Peyton knows, and I will be watching you tomorrow. Good luck, honey,” Mrs. Urich said.

I called Ashanti next and told her.

“Get out. Get. Out. No way. This is so exciting!”

“I’m so nervous. My stomach is already doing cartwheels. I can’t do one, but my stomach can. Seems unfair. What if I throw up before I go on? I did that right before I went on at the statewide Ingénue modeling competition in Detroit, and my mom had to give me a cough drop to cover up the smell.”

“I’m sure you’ll be fine, but… just in case, take a cough drop with you,” Ashanti said. “Good luck. You’ll be great and I’ll go set the DVR now.”

I hung up and sent a text to Vladi, India, Devon, Thalia, Tori, and Ericka, so no one would be mad and feel left out. Then I shut off my phone. Mom poked her head in the door to make sure I was in bed.

“Night, hon. Try to get some rest,” she said.

Easier said than done. I stared at my ceiling while thinking about all the things that could possibly go wrong tomorrow. Seeing as the show was on in the morning, I never got to watch it, so I had no idea what the set was like — did it have super high chairs and I’d struggle to get into them? And what if it had those higher stools that were kind of tippy and my rear overshot the seat and I fell off? Or what if the prep questions got lost and the interviewer asked me random things like my feelings on nuclear war or asked me about some foreign political leader who I had never heard of before, and I appeared stupid? Why did I say I’d do this? I tried to get comfortable and it felt like I had just dozed off when I felt my mom shaking my shoulder.

“Rise and shine, TV star,” she said.

Vision of the Griffin’s Heart, Andy Smithson, Book 5

Today, I’m excited to introduce a great fantasy author and fellow Texan, L.R.W. Lee, with her latest release, Vision of the Griffin’s Heart! Her books are aimed at children and young adults, but loved by all ages. Her fun fantasies have life lessons hidden within.

Andy Smithson Vision Griffin

Vision of the Griffin’s Heart, Andy Smithson, Book 5

Four years ago, Andy Smithson discovered he is the Chosen one to break a 500-yr-old curse plaguing the land of Oomaldee when he unexpectedly and mysteriously found himself there. To do so, he must collect ingredients for a magical potion. Thus far he has gathered the scale of a red dragon, venom from a giant serpent, a unicorn’s horn, and the tail feather of a phoenix. Now he must ask a griffin for one of its talons. There’s just one problem…humans have poached griffin treasure, causing these mythical creatures to attack on sight.

Complicating matters, the evil Abaddon, sovereign of Oomaldee’s northern neighbor, is turning more and more citizens into zolt in his ongoing campaign of terror as he sets in motion the final steps of his plan to conquer the land. Things really start to heat up in book five!

If you loved Harry Potter, you’ll love the Andy Smithson series chalk full of mythical creatures, newly invented animals like zolt, herewolves, and therewolves, a complex plot with evolving characters, and positive themes including responsibility, diligence, dignity, friendship and more.

Dear Mom–Love Advice from a Conservative Mom

Breakup of a couple with bad guy and sad girlfriend with a city in the background

I write about romance and relationships all the time. I don’t know what qualifies one as an expert, but I’ve been married to a very romantic man for thirty-three years, raised two awesome daughters, and mentored young people throughout my married life. For that reason, I’ve given a lot of relationship advice over the years. So, I wasn’t surprised when one of my readers contacted me on the website asking for love advice. I got her permission to publish her question on the blog, along with my answer (although we changed the names, of course.) Now she can have my advice, and perhaps you might offer your own thoughts, as well. I’m addressing it, Dear Mom, just for fun.

Dear Mom,

I’ve been dating my boyfriend, Mark, for six years. We’ve discussed marriage before, but he always skirts the subject. He treats me well and says he loves me, but he doesn’t seem interested in commitment. I love him very much, but I’m twenty-nine years old and I’d like to get married and have children. Should I push him into making a commitment? I think Mark would probably agree to get married if I insisted, rather than breaking up. But I don’t know if a marriage would be good if he felt like I forced him into it.

Frustrated Fran

Dear Fran,

This may sound a bit harsh. In my personal opinion, you shouldn’t waste your life and love on a man who can’t commit. Women need security, and we can’t feel secure with a man who won’t commit to us for whatever reason. Perhaps, if you give Mark a push, he will turn things around and commit himself wholeheartedly for the rest of your lives. But if not… even if he agrees to marriage, but doesn’t assure you of his commitment to you, I don’t think you should stay with him. Believe me, I’ve been married for thirty-three years to a man who would die for me or his daughters. It’s a wonderful blessing to have that kind of love, and you deserve that! Everyone does.

It’s quite likely that something in Mark’s past may be making this decision difficult for him. But marriage is hard, hard work. It requires two people who agree to work through every problem. Commitment is key to making a marriage work. Feelings come and go. You have to be as committed to a marriage as a mother is committed to a child. You can’t decide to quit when things become unpleasant. (Please note, I’m not referring to circumstances such as abuse.) I hope Mark can find the strength to make this commitment. If not, I hope you can bear the pain of breaking up, and I hope you find someone who will return your committed love as you deserve.

What do you think? Good advice? Bad idea?

Or maybe you’d like to ask Dear Mom for some relationship advice, too.

Step by Step: Automated Retweets

Continuing with the Step by Step Series (Simple Instructions for Beginners), here’s a lesson on utilizing a free Roundteam account for automated retweets.

First, go to Roundteam and set up an account. When you set up your initial account, you must choose some options. I do not recommend retweeting your own name.

Now, I will show a series of images to demonstrate how to set up a retweet hashtag. In this case I have chose to retweet #CR4U, which is the hashtag for Clean Indie Reads. But you can choose any hashtag, such as #FridayReads, #BookBoost, #IARTG, etc.

Next, I’ll show you how to create a list and retweet from a list on Roundteam. First, you must go to your twitter account and create a list. Start by searching for interesting twitter accounts you would like to retweet from. This can include any account you like, even friends and fellow authors. But keep in mind that Roundteam will retweet randomly from that account. So lists are more effective with twitter accounts that are uniform in their tweets. My example is a photography twitter account.

I hope these step by step instructions help to simply your twitter experience .

About the Author

Author Picture 2015-2016 b

Faith Blum started writing at an early age. She started even before she could read! She even thought she could write better than Dr. Seuss. (The picture doesn’t show it well, but there are scribblings on the page of Green Eggs and Ham). Now that she’s grown up a little more, she knows she will probably never reach the success of Dr. Seuss, but that doesn’t stop her from trying.
When she isn’t writing, Faith enjoys doing many right-brained activities such as reading, crafting, writing, playing piano, and playing games with her family. One of her dreams is to visit Castle City, Montana someday to see the ghost town she chose for her characters to live in. She currently lives on a hobby farm with her family in Wisconsin.

Clean Indie Reads

Guest Author: Diane Rapp with Golden Legacy

My guest today is Diane Rapp, sharing about her inspiration for her new release, GOLDEN LEGACY. Take it away, Diane!

Golden Legacy Small 1 (1)

I find it interesting to know what prompts an author to write about a specific idea, character, or situation. The idea for my newest novel, GOLDEN LEGACY, began in the 1990s after my family moved to Ridgway, Colorado and became acquainted with its neighbor Ouray. My architect husband designed a bank in Ouray that needed to resemble old-time buildings in the town, so we spent a lot of time exploring.

The spectacular mountains surrounding the mining towns of Telluride and Ouray are part of the San Juan Mountain range. Towns sprang up to support the intrepid miners who searched for gold, silver, and other minerals in treacherous granite cliffs. The history of the area prompted me to read real-life accounts written by women; TOMBOY BRIDE, and FATHER STRUCK IT RICH were vivid accounts of women who lived near Telluride and Ouray during mining days. Then I discovered a copy of Isabella Lucy Bird’s travels through Colorado, A LADY’S LIFE IN THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS. Miss Bird was an English gentlewoman, the daughter of a minister, who traveled alone during the 1800s, a rough-and-tumble time in Colorado history. She initiated her journey from San Francisco and later visited Denver and the mountains around the area that became the Rocky Mountain National Park near Estes Park and Boulder.

Real-life accounts are bound by reality. During her adventure, Miss Bird encountered an English ex-patriot, a ruggedly handsome man with a “reputation for violence and hard drinking” in the mountains. His English manners immediately emerged when he interacted Miss Bird. As I read the account, I saw the real potential for a romance and the chance to reform this man. True to real life, the romance never blossomed, which was very disappointing!

During the years since my first exposure to Miss Bird’s narrative, I considered how I would rewrite the story, developing a romance between two charismatic English compatriots and making the story more dramatic. After completing the third novel in my High Seas Mystery series, I decided it might be fun to transport those familiar characters into the magnificent mountains of Colorado. (After all, Kayla lived in Colorado and returned there to recover from a gunshot wound.) What better story than searching for a lost gold mine, following clues from a journal written by a plucky ancestor from the 1880s?

Map Ouray Tattered Edge

Little did I realize when I initiated the project how much research would be necessary to write an account of a character in 1888.   I confirmed railroad routes to Ouray, Colorado, learned about train sleeping accommodations, and frequently stopped writing to research ladies’ fashions or check on items that had been invented by 1888. As I immersed myself into the vernacular of the time period, I read historical novels to absorb the jargon.

Narrow Gauge Train

After the journal was complete, I thought it would be easier to write the modern-day portion of the story. I was wrong. I discovered that modern-day language felt less colorful and dull. I needed to incorporate danger and excitement into the modern story, but I also needed to mesh the two narratives together in a believable manner. I decided that Kayla must read her ancestor’s journal in order to pass a test to inherit the family legacy. I built a “family tree” from Ginny down to Kayla, using dates and approximate life-cycles to determine how many women might have already completed the family quest. By establishing names and brief histories for each woman, I could incorporate a back story for family members to drop into the storyline.

While my husband and I lived in Ridgway, we toured the Bachelor Mine and drove over scary Jeep trails, but I needed photos to complete my tale. The beautiful Beaumont Hotel would become a central landmark in my story. The building was beautifully renovated, so I contacted the current owners to ask for photos. Jennifer Leaver was kind enough to supply me with a treasure-trove of old-time and current photos to use in the book. Lake Como is a sparkling turquoise gem, deep in the mountains. I needed a beautiful photo to use in the book. Again I was lucky, Rose Krohn Epps gave me a license to use her vivid photo for the book, advertising, and articles about the book. I took time to “colorize” the old-time photos to make them pop in Kindles that show color.

I encourage readers to visit my website page for GOLDEN LEGACY and enjoy the color slide show of pictures used in the book (Lake Como appears on the back cover of the print edition). The e-book and print edition are now available on Amazon at Consider reading and reviewing my year-long project as the story became close to my heart.
